For fans closely following Jacksonville\u2019s pass rush, the news is worth sitting with. The Jaguars ranked 27th in sacks in 2025, and while injuries to Travon Walker and Arik Armstead clearly accounted for a significant portion of that shortfall, the nose tackle position was a persistent problem that no amount of edge production could fully compensate for. Davon Hamilton, Jacksonville\u2019s primary interior presence at the position, is a dominant presence in the run game. However, he generated just 11 quarterback pressures for the entire 2025 regular season.<\/p>\n
Vea, playing all 17 games for Tampa Bay, produced 51 pressures, a number that would have led every defensive tackle on the Jaguars\u2019 roster, with Armstead\u2019s 48 ranking second on the team. According to Pro Football Focus, Vea\u2019s 77.0 pass rush grade ranked 12th among all interior defensive linemen in the league, including nose tackles and three-technique defensive tackles. Meanwhile, his overall defensive grade placed him 20th among 134 qualified players at the position. Even in run defense, his 62.5 PFF grade edges out Hamilton\u2019s 61.1.<\/p>\n
Put plainly, acquiring Vea would represent a meaningful upgrade over what Jacksonville currently deploys at the position, addressing one of the most glaring structural weaknesses in Anthony Campanile\u2019s defensive front in a single move.<\/p>\n
The cost, however, will be the conversation stopper for many. Most evaluators around the league have framed any Vea trade discussion as beginning in the range of a player and a second-round pick, with some suggesting a first-round selection is not entirely out of the question, depending on the market that develops. ESPN\u2019s Benjamin Solak noted that Vea is one of only two players in the NFL to produce 50 or more pressures from the nose tackle position over the last three combined seasons, and the other player on that list was Dexter Lawrence, who was ultimately traded to the Cincinnati Bengals for the tenth overall pick in this year\u2019s draft. Vea is likely a step below Lawrence\u2019s trade value, but the range being discussed is somewhat similar, and it would require genuine organizational commitment for any team to engage seriously.<\/p>\n
The Money Must Make Sense<\/p>\n
Jacksonville\u2019s leverage in this conversation is an interesting one, also. Vea has, reportedly, preferred a move to a California market or to the Las Vegas Raiders following any trade, which would position him closer to his roots. While Florida is neither of those destinations, it does carry one significant financial advantage that no California team can offer: zero state income tax.<\/p>\n
On a salary of $18 million or more, the difference between playing in Florida and playing in California represents a meaningful real dollar figure that a general manager like James Gladstone is perfectly capable of putting in front of a player during negotiations. While Vea doesn\u2019t have a no-trade clause in his contract, he would need to sign off on any extension, as he\u2019s currently on the final year of his contract, making $18 million in 2026. Whether that pitch is compelling enough to move Vea\u2019s preferred destination list is an open question, but it is a card Jacksonville holds that California franchises can\u2019t match. And with Vea currently playing right down the road in Tampa, a short relocation, while remaining in sunny Florida could still be an appealing package.<\/p>\n
