Is that putting the cart before the horse?

These Broncos have moved into their trophy house before doing what matters most: hoisting that championship trophy.

On the eve of the team’s most-anticipated training camp in more than a decade, Surtain stood in front of what might well be the most gorgeous building in the NFL.

The spanking-new training facility feels like a $175 million football resort that’s as Colorado spectacular as anything human-made in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains can be.

“Everything is state of the art,” Surtain said Tuesday. “When I first got in … I was looking at it and I was like, ‘Wow.’ I was in awe.”

Don’t get too comfortable, fellas.

Call me old school. Or just call me old.

But I believe the opportunity to win a championship should feel like hard work, not a luxury vacation.

Now that we can do side-by-side comparisons, it’s interesting how the two families from the Walmart empire conduct their sports business in Denver.

While Stan and Josh Kroenke deserve kudos for bringing championship parades to our fair city in 2022 and 2023, months on the calendar keep flipping while the Avalanche still practice in a frumpy suburban rec center and Nikola Jokic shoots jump shots between games in a facility no more impressive than the basketball digs of Valor Christian High School.

With the Broncos redefining the meaning of plush, they’re pushing the NFL to construct the same Taj Mahal facilities that dominate the college football map.

“The locker room is crazy. … It feels like I’m in college again,” said Surtain, who rolled with the Tide at Alabama before joining the Broncos as a first-round draft pick in 2021.

The NFL has long built temples where our communities gather in the fall. But catering to football players with staff nutritionists, a golf simulator and a spa-like locker room at a five-star resort headquarters is a relatively new development that raises the bar on player entitlement.

Long before Steve Atwater was a two-time NFL champ or Hall of Fame safety, he joined the Broncos as a rookie in 1989.

“When I first got to Denver, our facility was up on 58th Street,” Atwater said. “Do you remember?”

Remember it? How could I forget?

Back in those days, every time I reported to work at the Broncos practice site, I was glad to leave before the joint crumbled and fell on my head.

When Atwater arrived in Colorado from the University of Arkansas, I pounded a primitive laptop that ink-stained wretches fondly cursed as the “Trash-80” in a rickety Broncos facility that so emphatically put the ram into shackle that I not-so-fondly referred to it as The Trailer Park.

“You said that, not me,” said Atwater, laughing because he knew all-too-well that the description fit.

In the generation that has passed since Atwater entered the league, the Broncos have grown up, painstakingly being built into a stalwart franchise by Pat Bowlen that hoisted the Vince Lombardi Trophy as Super Bowl champs three times.

But clothes don’t make the man. And it takes more than a fancy building to be a champion.

Since Cowboys owner Jerry Jones opened the doors to The Star on 91 finely manicured acres north of Dallas in 2016, how many times has his team won the league championship?

Zip. Nada. Zilch.

As they emerge from a real contender for the most impressive training facility in the entire NFL and hit the field for training camp this week, the Broncos will look as if they’ve arrived.

Super Bowl. Or bust.

“I think we’ve got all the right pieces, the right team,” Surtain said.

While the investment that Carrie Walton and Greg Penner have made in our local football heroes stands as a testament to ownership’s commitment to excellence, the shimmering glass and towering timber at the new team headquarters is christened with one big caveat.

This team, guided by coach Sean Payton, has given Broncos Country reason to dream big again.

But truth be told: Surtain and Nix ain’t done nothing yet.

If these Broncos want to emulate the legendary feats of local football legends like John Elway and Atwater, the hardest championship work has only just begun.
