The New England Patriots<\/a> still don\u2019t have a new contract with Christian Gonzalez<\/a>, and Mike Vrabel reduced the latest update to one result Saturday.<\/p>\n Vrabel offered his no-nonsense outlook on the situation before the Patriots\u2019 training camp practice.<\/p>\n The head coach didn\u2019t suggest an agreement was close, but he also showed no concern about how Gonzalez has handled an uncertain summer.<\/p>\n \u201cListen, we\u2019ve talked about this contract. Henderson\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n Vrabel followed his contract response by praising Gonzalez\u2019s professionalism and the way he has approached camp.<\/p>\n He said the cornerback has made his desire to improve clear through his preparation and practice performance, per 98.5 The Sports Hub<\/a>.<\/p>\n That part of the answer is better than another general statement about ongoing discussions.<\/p>\n Gonzalez stayed away from voluntary offseason workouts and didn\u2019t participate in competitive team periods during mandatory minicamp.<\/p>\n Since training camp opened, however, he has continued competing with the defense and taking on the Patriots\u2019 receivers.<\/p>\n Vrabel was also asked whether Gonzalez\u2019s participation reflected a team policy against negotiating with players who hold out.<\/p>\n The coach declined to verify a blanket rule and described those decisions as case-by-case situations.<\/p>\n He instead explained that New England wants to draft and develop good players, then re-sign the ones who can help the organization win.<\/p>\n Gonzalez fits that description after emerging as one of the league\u2019s top cornerbacks during his first three seasons.<\/p>\n Gonzalez Keeps Practicing While Talks Continue GettyOne anonymous GM believes that the Patriots will give Christian Gonzalez a big-money contract extension before the 2026 season.<\/p>\n The lack of an agreement has drawn more attention since owner Robert Kraft publicly outlined the size of New England\u2019s offer.<\/p>\n Kraft said the Patriots proposed a deal<\/a> that would make Gonzalez the NFL\u2019s highest-paid cornerback and give him the largest contract in franchise history.<\/p>\n This act would require surpassing the four-year, $124 million extension Trent McDuffie<\/a> signed with the Rams<\/a>. McDuffie\u2019s contract carries a $31 million average annual value, giving the sides a clear market marker as they continue negotiating<\/a>.<\/p>\n Gonzalez responded carefully when asked about Kraft\u2019s public comments.<\/p>\n He expressed respect for the owner but said he preferred to keep the negotiations between the team and his representatives.<\/p>\n Asked whether he believed the extension would eventually happen, Gonzalez said, \u201cI hope so,\u201d according to Pats Pulpit<\/a>.<\/p>\n The cornerback is already under contract through 2027 after New England exercised his fifth-year option, so neither side faces an immediate expiration date.<\/p>\n But what\u2019s up in the air is whether the Patriots can secure one of their best young players before another season changes the market or introduces additional risk.<\/p>\n Vrabel offered no breakthrough Saturday.<\/p>\n \n\t\t\tDuncan Day<\/a> is a sports contributor for Heavy.
