Mike McDaniel needed only a few practices in San Diego<\/a> to confirm at least one part of Ron Burgundy\u2019s reporting<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cRon Burgundy wasn\u2019t lying,\u201d the Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator told reporters Wednesday. \u201cThis place is sweet.\u201d<\/p>\n

McDaniel, known for delivering dry one-liners with the same expression he uses to explain pre-snap motion, made the observation while the Chargers practiced in their former home city. <\/p>\n

His praise evoked Burgundy\u2019s devotion to San Diego in \u201cAnchorman,\u201d though McDaniel wisely stopped short of endorsing the fictitious anchor\u2019s historical research.<\/p>\n

Burgundy famously claimed San Diego was \u201cdiscovered by the Germans in 1904\u201d before assigning the city a colorful \u2014 and wildly inaccurate \u2014 Teutonic translation.<\/p>\n

The real history predates Burgundy\u2019s version by several centuries; in fact, he missed the Indigenous history, two Spanish explorers and several hundred years.<\/p>\n

McDaniel also offered real football analysis Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Running back Omarion Hampton has made an equally strong impression.<\/p>\n

McDaniel said Hampton has \u201cshown the most growth of anybody\u201d on the offense before issuing a warning to defenders confronting the 220-pound runner.<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody wants to tackle that guy,\u201d McDaniel said.<\/p>\n

McDaniel is encouraging Hampton to stop his feet less frequently and trust his power when creases become crowded. Hampton possesses the size to run through contact but can occasionally search for an elusive escape instead of accepting the direct route.<\/p>\n

Keaton Mitchell and Kimani Vidal<\/a> are change or pace with explosive upside, but Hampton remains positioned to lead a rushing attack expected to hold a central role in McDaniel\u2019s offense.<\/p>\n

Burgundy\u2019s version of San Diego history belongs in a newsroom without fact-checkers. McDaniel\u2019s plan is simpler: Give Justin Herbert quicker answers<\/a>, keep Hampton moving forward and, at all times, stay classy.<\/p>\n
