ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KCTV) – There aren\u2019t many people more excited for the Kansas City Chiefs\u2019 first preseason game than Dave Toub.<\/p>\n
The Chiefs\u2019 special teams coordinator gets a chance to evaluate the roster and its best fits for the various roles needed on punt and kick coverages and returns.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m 4 deep at a lot of positions,\u201d Toub said Wednesday following the Chiefs\u2019 final padded practice before Saturday\u2019s preseason opener. \u201cSo you\u2019ll see a lot of different bodies, especially in that third and fourth quarter.\u201d<\/p>\n
Toub said Wednesday one of the positions he has very few questions about — at least for the starting role — is kick returner and punt returner.<\/p>\n
That role should be filled by the same player, wide receiver Nikko Remigio.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to see everybody, but I don\u2019t need to see a lot of Nikko,\u201d Toub said. \u201cIf he gets one touch on punt and kick return, I\u2019m good.\u201d<\/p>\n
Remigio has 39 punt returns and 50 kick returns over regular and postseason play across his first two seasons in the league. The confidence Toub expressed in the 26-year-old from California comes with higher expectations for his production when the regular season arrives.<\/p>\n
\u201cMore touchdowns, that would be great,\u201d Toub said of what he\u2019d like to see from Remigio in 2026. \u201cWhat he\u2019s doing now, his vision has really improved. You see it in practice, he\u2019ll see a crack in the middle and instead of trying to run all the way around it, he\u2019ll plant a foot and get up field and get 15 or 20 extra yards.<\/p>\n
\u201cThose are the ones that sometimes pop. He\u2019s catching the ball great. I\u2019m just really pleased with where he\u2019s at right now.\u201d<\/p>\n
As for Saturday\u2019s preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams, once Remigio is out, Toub said he\u2019d like to see second-year running back Brashard Smith get a punt return and \u201cmaybe even (rookie wide receiver Cyrus) Allen.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI still have to talk to coach (Reid) and see if he\u2019s up to it — with his leg,\u201d Toub said. \u201cBut I\u2019d like to see him get one in the return game.\u201d<\/p>\n
Toub also said he\u2019s excited to see rookie wide receiver Jacob De Jesus.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s a great catcher and he\u2019s got a lot of hunger to him,\u201d Toub said. \u201cIt\u2019ll be exciting when he gets the ball in his hands.\u201d<\/p>\n
