We are just days away from the Kansas City Chiefs<\/a>\u2019 preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams<\/a>. The two teams will face off at Arrowhead Stadium on Saturday, the first live action against another team for the Chiefs this preseason.<\/p>\n

The Rams, like many teams, have held joint practices during training camp, but that has never been a consideration for head coach Andy Reid. He is one of the few NFL teams that don\u2019t participate in joint training camp sessions every year.<\/p>\n

Special teams coordinator Dave Toub has been with Reid since 2013, has gotten used to Reid\u2019s process and recognizes how important it will be to get into the exhibition games.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t wait,\u201d Toub told local media after Wednesday\u2019s practice. \u201cFor me, this is really the time I get to evaluate whether a guy can block or tackle on special teams- live tackling to the ground- plus you\u2019re hitting somebody else. These guys have been hitting each other for a few weeks now. It\u2019s getting old; it really is getting old. Same thing, over and over again; this is going to be great to have a game.\u201d<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what to know from Wednesday\u2019s practice:<\/p>\n

During the practice session, three Chiefs players left practice due to injury: linebacker Nick Bolton, tight end Jared Wiley and rookie defensive tackle Peter Woods.<\/p>\n

We will await more information on the new injuries. Aside from that, rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane continued to wear a yellow non-contact jersey, but upped his participation in practice.<\/p>\n

Wide receiver Jimmy Holiday, right guard Trey Smith, cornerback L\u2019Jarius Sneed and linebacker Drue Tranquill did not appear on the field at Wednesday\u2019s practice.<\/p>\n

Special teams snap breakdown<\/p>\n

Toub shared the game plan for how special teams snaps will be broken down on Saturday, giving us a glimpse into how the starting offense and defense could be treated as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ll have my front-line guys early in the game, but they\u2019re going to be out,\u201d Toub said. \u201cIf you watch early, you\u2019ll see them. Then it\u2019s going to be a lot of the twos and threes; I got four deep everywhere: kickoff, kickoff return, everywhere. You\u2019re going to see a lot of different bodies, especially in the third and fourth quarter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Toub has four return men to focus on when given the opportunity against the Rams: wide receiver Nikko Remigio, running back Brashard Smith, rookie wideout Cyrus Allen and rookie receiver Jacob De Jesus.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to see everybody, really. I don\u2019t need to see a lot of Nikko,\u201d Toub shared. \u201cIf he gets one touch on punt and one on kick return, I\u2019m good. I really want to see the off returners blocking more than anything. I\u2019d like to see Brashard get one punt return for sure, maybe even Allen; I still have to talk to coach to see if he\u2019s up to speed with his leg and everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Toub later elaborated on the incumbent returner, who would be entering his third year as the team\u2019s primary return man. He wants to see more home runs than Remigio has given to the team in that time.<\/p>\n

\u201cMore touchdowns, that would be great,\u201d Toub responded when asked what he wants to see from Remigio. \u201cHis vision has really improved, I think. You see it in practice; he\u2019ll see a crack and instead of trying to run all the way around it, he\u2019ll plant a foot and get upfield and get 15 or 20 extra yards. Those are the ones that sometimes they\u2019ll pop and get out on you in a hurry. He\u2019s catching the ball great; I\u2019m just really pleased with where he\u2019s at.\u201d<\/p>\n

Allen is still working back to full speed after going down in practice multiple times in training camp so far. If he is limited in playing time, it could open up more opportunities for the electric undrafted wideout from California.<\/p>\n

\u201cDe Jesus, I\u2019m excited to see him,\u201d Toub said. \u201cHe\u2019s a great catcher, and he\u2019s got a lot of hunger to him. It\u2019s going to be exciting when he has the ball in his hands.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brashard Smith \u2018has come along great\u2019<\/p>\n

Smith is the second return specialist Toub talks about behind the experienced Remigio. We have seen what Smith can do with the ball in his hands, and Toub sees it as a reason Smith will be featured more in the offense.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has come along great,\u201d Toub said. \u201cIf you watch his blocking, that\u2019s where you really need to improve. He\u2019s sticking up in there as a pass blocker because you do that a lot in our offense. The running backs have to do that a lot, and he\u2019s doing a great job. There\u2019s no question how he catches the ball out of the backfield and all that stuff, but he is stepping it up as a blocker.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Chiefs will hold one more practice before Saturday\u2019s game: Thursday morning at 9:15 a.m. The session is anticipated to be lighter with the exhibition nearing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"We are just days away from the Kansas City Chiefs\u2019 preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams.
