One Detroit Lions player may have won himself a 53-man roster spot Thursday night while barely showing up on the stat sheet. One catch. 14 yards. That\u2019s about all you\u2019ll see in the box score. But what he did everywhere else tells a completely different story.<\/p>\n

The Detroit Lions wide receiver 5 battle has been one of the more compelling roster competitions this preseason, and after the latest game, Tay Martin might have settled it. Not with a highlight-reel performance. Not with a gaudy stat line. Martin finished with one catch for 14 yards. That\u2019s it. And it might have been enough.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the thing. When you\u2019re talking about that fifth receiver spot, the conversation changes. It\u2019s not about who can go out there and be a huge offensive weapon. It\u2019s about what you can do on special teams, what you can do in the run game, and what you bring to the team beyond catching passes. Martin checked every single box.<\/p>\n

The run blocking tells the story<\/p>\n

Martin was in on 13 run-blocking snaps and graded out with a 78.3 run-block grade from Pro Football Focus. That was the highest run blocking grade on the entire Lions roster for the night. Offensive linemen, running backs, you name it. The highest run blocking grade went to a wide receiver, and that says a ton.<\/p>\n

You have to understand what that means in Detroit\u2019s offense. The Lions love blocking. They want their receivers to get downfield and clear the way. No block, no rock. And in a zone offense, that kind of grade on that many snaps is a big deal.<\/p>\n

Now look at the guys Martin has been competing with. Dominic Lovett graded out at 60.9. Malik Cunningham came in at 60.8. Cedric Wilson had a 59.3. Isaac TeSlaa, who is going to get a roster spot regardless, posted a 60.2. Lucky Jackson hit 59.4. Tarik Black came in at 57.6. Tom Kennedy had a 54.4. It\u2019s not close.<\/p>\n

Special teams sealed it<\/p>\n

This is where Martin really nailed it. He earned the Lions\u2019 highest special teams grade of the night with a 79.9 from Pro Football Focus. Nobody had it better than he did.<\/p>\n

Tarik Black posted a 76.5 special teams grade, which is solid. But Black didn\u2019t get the higher grades on offense either, even though he had the one catch for 24 yards and a touchdown. That was a nice play, and Black did have a decent night overall. But when you stack the full picture side by side, Martin\u2019s total contribution stands out.<\/p>\n

Lovett, who we\u2019ve talked a lot about in this competition, graded out at just 59.9 on special teams. Not great.<\/p>\n

What the 5th receiver spot actually requires<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been leaning towards Martin for a while now. If you look at my 53-man roster prediction from earlier Friday morning<\/a>, you\u2019ll see I had Martin slotted into that wide receiver 5 spot. This game reinforced that.<\/p>\n

At that position on the depth chart, the job description is clear. You\u2019re expected to be good at blocking. You\u2019re expected to be really good on special teams. And you\u2019re expected to be able to do at least something when you come in on offense. Martin did more than enough in all three areas.<\/p>\n

Most people will come out of this game talking about Tarik Black\u2019s touchdown catch. And that\u2019s fair. But Martin\u2019s night was the kind of performance that wins roster spots. It won\u2019t show up on a highlight reel, but it showed up where it mattered. Let\u2019s see if the Lions agree when final cuts come around.<\/p>\n
