One was due to injury, which is part and parcel of the NFL, while the other appears to have been at least partly self-inflicted.<\/p>\n<p>1. The self-inflicted center tempest<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">The most scrutinized sequence of events this offseason started when the front office made the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/articles\/commanders-did-not-release-tyler-113109019.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">bold choice to cut Tyler Biadasz<\/a> several days before the start of free agency. When roster holes or depth issues became apparent late in the summer, the front office took action:<\/p>\n<p>Brought in elite veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs to bolster the receiver group.Secured veteran cornerbacks Rasul Douglas and Fabian Moreau to steady the secondary.Signed veteran tackle D.J. Humphries as veteran insurance behind Coleman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">Yet, even as multiple centers were traded across the league in the hours leading up to final roster cutdowns, Washington chose to stand pat.<\/p>\n<p>The stakes: Protecting Jayden Daniels and executing David Blough\u2019s scheme<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">The consequences of this uneven roster construction could turn out to be a big deal when the regular season starts. Franchise quarterback Jayden Daniels must be kept clean to survive and thrive in his key 3rd NFL season. Furthermore, newly promoted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commanders.com\/team\/coaches-roster\/david-blough\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">offensive coordinator David Blough<\/a>\u2014who is stepping into a major play-calling role for the first time\u2014has promised a creative, high-speed offense designed to stress defenses. JD5\u2019s unique abilities, if he can avoid the kind of injuries that plagued him a year ago, erase a lot of mistakes and lift the play of every offensive player on the field with him.
