Sean McDermott is already plotting out his next moves to land back in the NFL \u2014 and he\u2019s learned some tough truths to start.<\/p>\n

The former Bills coach revealed on the \u201cRich Eisen Show\u201d<\/a> that he has gone back to people inside the organization to discover what could be improved upon now that he has a different perspective. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you\u2019re a head coach or a leader of any sort, you don\u2019t always get this space to just live life and to reflect,\u201d McDermott said. \u201cI\u2019ve been reflecting on my journey in Buffalo. The good things, the things I\u2019d like to do differently in the next go-around.\u201d<\/p>\n

McDermott has resisted the urge<\/a> to take on a role with a team as an assistant coach after being fired by the Bills following their overtime playoff loss to the Broncos.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The 52-year-old still wants to be an NFL head coach, and apparently those inside the Bills building told McDermott that he could do a better job relating to the players, as he has investigated what went wrong since being fired<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt hit me between the eyes,\u201d McDermott said of the feedback he got back from unnamed Bills personnel. \u201cHey, sharing more of myself.<\/p>\n

\u201cSharing more of who Sean really is. From a personal level, dropping my guard a little bit and really just showing them my true self as a person. I think that just comes from getting so focused on the job and the task at hand.\u201d<\/p>\n

McDermott went 98-50 and made the playoffs in seven of his eight years as head coach, but was never able to reach the Super Bowl \u2014 including two heartbreaking losses to the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game.<\/p>\n

McDermott did not mention whether he spoke to any players or, more specifically, his star quarterback Josh Allen. <\/p>\n

Allen is now being coached by his former offensive coordinator Joe Brady, who was on McDermott\u2019s staff from 2022-25<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cDoing some other types of reflection as well, which is asking other people and sort of a blind-spot type of exercise. People in the building in Buffalo who I respect,\u201d McDermott said. \u201cBecause sometimes as a head coach, not everything gets to the top of the food chain. Every story. Every truth. So just going back and probing because, I want to know. I want to know what I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u2019s still being paid by the Bills, earning $8 million per season for the next two years to stay at home as he wraps up his coaching contract through 2027.\u00a0<\/p>\n
