We’ve learned some very interesting information in the past few hours regarding the Montreal Canadiens and the 2025 NHL Draft.
As you know, the Canadiens entered this year’s draft with the 16th and 17th overall picks in the first round.
But there’s one burning question for many fans and analysts:
Now that we know which players were available at picks 16 and 17, who were the Canadiens actually going to select?
On this subject, Martin Lapointe agreed to comment-and he flat out gave the answer.
Martin Lapointe Reveals That Alexander Zharovsky Was the Montreal Canadiens’ Original First-Round Pick
“We drafted Zharovsky in the second round, but he was actually our first-round pick!”
This makes the Noah Dobson trade even more interesting!”Martin Lapointe confirms what we heard from scouts: the Canadiens had Alexander Zharovsky ranked at 16/17 on their internal draft list.”
– Marco D’Amico
“The mandate was to find a top 6 talent. Usually top 6 talent disappears pretty quickly after a certain point in the draft. It’s pretty rare when you find them a little bit later and there are circumstances that surround those drops. In this case, we had Alexander in the 1st round..”
– Nick Bobrov on the Habs drafting winger Alexander Zharovsky in the 2nd round
It may be a bit of an oversimplification, but knowing this, we could say the Noah Dobson trade looks like this for the Canadiens:
– Noah Dobson in exchange for Emil Heineman, the 17th overall pick, and two second-round picks.
Put simply, the Canadiens still got their 16th overall pick-Alexander Zharovsky-so there you have it.
In any case, it once again seems like an excellent move by Kent Hughes.
