With the conclusion of the 2025 NHL playoffs earlier this week, the news surrounding the Dallas Stars has been somewhat dry. So today we’re going to wind the clock back a couple of years. The Seattle Kraken were in their second season, and thus far best season to date hoping to expand on said year in round two of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
This is the first, and only playoff meeting so far between Dallas and Seattle. This round didn’t disappoint. Plus it was a battle between a team that plays Pantera, and a team that puts on Nirvana.
Pavelski scored 4
To start the second round of the NHL playoffs, the Kraken were riding high in their second season in franchise history. They just upset the defending Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche in seven games. Seattle headed into Dallas as under dogs again with no fear. Winning game one of the series. On May 4th in a losing effort, former Star Joe Pavelski had himself a game. Getting a hat trick wasn’t enough. Pavelski did all the goal scoring for the Stars to send the game into overtime. While the Stars didn’t earn a point for the overtime loss in the playoffs, Pavelski did springboard the team to even up the series in a couple of nights one all.
Not to worry, the Stars split on home ice two nights later by winning 4-2. Heading to Washington after evening up the series at one all.
Kraken scored a TD + an XP
After splitting in Dallas, Seattle hosted the Stars on May 7th, and took game three with a decisive score of 7-2. Retaking the series lead two games to one, and (temporarily) regained the home ice advantage the stole a couple games prior.
Dallas did score themselves a safety in the game, but it wasn’t quite enough that night.
Stars respond with a TD
Down two games to one on the road, the Stars needed an answer. Former Star Max Domi scored two goals on May 9th as the Stars double up the Kraken 6-3, and retake home ice. A score that is more exciting in hockey to most people than if it were a football score.
For the next two games, it was all about the home team getting it done. On May 11th we saw Jake Oettinger in net, and the Stars defensively used home ice to their advantage and held the Kraken to only two goals in a relatively high scoring series. Dallas more than doubled Seattle as they won the contest 5-2 on May 13th. For game six in Seattle, the Kraken used their home ice advantage to propel their offense in a 6-3 drubbing. Setting up a winner take all game game seven.
Game Seven
On May 15th, Wyatt Johnston in his rookie season had his coming out party in Dallas. Straight into the NHL season while bypassing the AHL’s Texas Stars just seven months ago, Johnston scored a series clinching goal. Solidifying himself as one of the best, and most clutch goal scorers on the team. Johnston’s team prevailed over the 2023 Calder trophy recipient Matty Beniers, and the Kraken.

Game Seven wasn’t just about Johnston’s heroics. The Stars struggled to keep the puck out of the back of their net in a hostile Climate Pledge arena up in the emerald state. In a series where two resilient and skilled teams clashed, the end result was Dallas in seven. Overall a series that Stars fans, and hockey fans can look back on fondly and pull out the popcorn to watch a rerun or the highlights. Given the thrill of winning game seven on a Johnston goal by a final score of 2-1, and thus far is the only playoff meeting between the two teams, Stars fans might want to grab themselves a playoff series hockey puck as a memento.
