ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — The Flyers used one of their two fifth-round picks in the 2025 NHL draft on Max Westergard.
The Finnish winger went to the Flyers at 132nd overall Saturday afternoon.
Westergard was the 30th-ranked international skater by NHL Central Scouting, climbing 36 spots from his midterm mark of 66th. At the Swedish under-20 level, Westergard had 19 goals and 31 assists over 41 games in 2024-25 for Frolunda.
He also played well for Team Finland at the 2025 IIHF U-18 World Junior Championship in Frisco, Texas. The 5-foot-11, 161-pounder put up six points (two goals, four assists) and a plus-6 rating in five games.
“Our European guys followed him closely,” Flyers assistant general manager Brent Flahr said Saturday from the team’s draft headquarters at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. “He had a very good tournament in Texas at the U-18s. He’s a talented kid. … He’s not the biggest, he’s going to have to put on some weight and get stronger. But he’s quick, he has got skill, he can create offense by himself. So at that point, we thought it was a value pick.”
EliteProspects.com considered Westergard as the 108th-ranked player in the draft. The 17-year-old is set to play in the SHL, Sweden’s top pro league, next season.
