The Edmonton Oilers are losing a middle-six forward to Free Agency.
Corey Perry is signing with the Los Angeles Kings. It is a one-year deal, with a $2m AAV plus a possible addition of $2m in bonuses. Too rich for the cap-challenged Oilers’ blood.
The 40-year-old is coming off a 1-year, $1.15m contract. More than decent production for that kind of dough, 19-11-30 in 81 GP. Perry also had 61 PIM. And he was very effective in the playoffs, 10-4-14 in 22GP, and filled in admirably after Zach Hyman went down with an injury.
Perry proved very useful, playing up and down the lineup including power Play time. And his contributions in the room were also said to be substantial.
But at his age, injury and regression are major-league risks. The Kings are gambling that Father Time is on their side.
The Viktor Arvidsson trade with Boston had left the Oilers with $4.55m in cap space (PuckPedia).
But those savings will be spent elsewhere.
