CLEVELAND, Ohio — Mitch Marner has a new long-term home thanks to the help of his former home.
According to multiple reports including Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet in Canada, the Toronto Maple Leafs have done a sign-and-trade of Marner to the Vegas Golden Knights.
Friedman reported that the deal for Marner is worth eight years and $12 million in average annual value.
Former TSN reporter Bob McKenzie added that forward Nicolas Roy will be going back to Toronto in a one-for-one deal.
By doing a sign-and-trade involving the Maple Leafs, Marner was able to get an eighth year in his contract which he would not have been able to do had he hit free agency on Tuesday at noon Eastern.
Since being drafted fourth overall by the Maple Leafs in 2015, Marner has played 657 NHL games, all with Toronto, and has 221 goals and 520 assists for 741 points. Marner is also coming off a career-high 102-point season in Toronto.
But he has not quite been as effective in the postseason, scoring 63 points and 10 goals in 70 playoff games.
Marner and the Maple Leafs lost in seven games in the second round of the playoffs to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers.
