We have an interesting development for Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens, coming from the excellent Tony Marinaro.

As we reported in recent hours, according to information from the excellent Marc-Olivier Beaudoin, Kent Hughes has officially submitted a contract offer to acquire 25-year-old centerman Joe Veleno.

And now we have an update!

Tony Marinaro places the Montreal Canadiens among the three finalists to sign Quebec forward Joe Veleno: the Colorado Avalanche are currently leading

That’s exactly what he just reported.

“I’m hearing the Colorado Avalanche are currently in pole position to sign Joe Veleno. The Montreal Canadiens and the Nashville Predators are still in the mix.”

So we now have the names of the three teams still in the running.

At 25 years old, Joe Veleno recorded 17 points in 74 games this season with the Detroit Red Wings and the Chicago Blackhawks.

He was earning $2.275 million per year through 2026, but that contract was just bought out, which explains his current status as an unrestricted free agent.

Veleno was the 30th overall pick (1st round) in the 2018 draft, and he had just been traded from the Chicago Blackhawks to the Seattle Kraken in the Andre Burakovsky deal, before having his contract bought out.
