Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies had some interesting comments about the departure of Mitch Marner, showing that he’s not losing much sleep over the departure.Fresh off of signing a six-year extension with a $7.75M cap hit with minimal trade protection, 22-year-old power forward Matthew Knies spoke with the media on Wednesday to discuss his new deal and the departure of his now former linemate, Mitch Marner.

In discussing Marner, Knies admitted he was disappointed to see Marner leave, but is looking forward to the next chapter of Maple Leafs hockey, quickly dismissing the idea that the Leafs are worse now than they were. In fact, he believes the Leafs will be stronger.

“I wasn’t the happiest to see that he’s leaving but I think we made some great moves, some great additions. I think we’re going to be stronger. I think we’re going to have a great team. You’re not excited to see one of your captains, one of your veteran players on another team, but that’s the business of the game. I think we’re going to make some strong moves, and I have full faith in Tre and Berube to create a winning team.”

The former second-round pick will be looked upon to continue to grow on both sides of the puck after putting up a very respectable 29 goals and 58 points last season while becoming an efficient and trusted penalty killer for Craig Berube in his sophomore season.
