COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — The Columbus Blue Jackets shared a heartwarming tribute to Matiss Kivlenieks, a goalie for the team who tragically died four years ago on the 4th of July in a tragic fireworks accident.
The video, posted on the team’s social media pages, chronicled his career with the CBJ and featured some of his best saves.
“Your memory continues to stay with us every day, Kivi,” the post said.
Kivlenieks died during a fireworks accident in Oakland County, Michigan, during a Fourth of July backyard celebration. He was hit in the chest, records say. He was only 24 years old.
Former Blue Jackets President of Hockey Operations John Davidson said Kivlenieks left a lasting impact on the organization.
“We are shocked and saddened by the loss of Matiss Kivlenieks, and we extend our deepest sympathies to his mother, Astrida, his family and friends during this devastating time,” said Davidson. “Kivi was an outstanding young man who greeted every day and everyone with a smile and the impact he had during his four years with our organization will not be forgotten.”
Fellow goaltender Elvis Merzlikins said that Kivlenieks saved many lives that day.
“He saved not just many lives; but when it happened, I was standing 20-30 feet in back of him, and I was hugging my wife. He saved my son, he saved my wife, and he saved me,” said Merzlikins.
The two, both from Latvia, had formed a special bond.
In his short career, Kivlenieks played in eight games while starting six, where he earned a 2-2-2 record.
