The New York Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes recently completed a trade that sent K’Andre Miller to a divisional rival. The Canes sent two picks (1st and 2nd round) and a prospect, Scott Morrow, in return for the former 1st-round pick. Now, there’s been interesting news regarding the deal dropped by NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman.

The New York Rangers could’ve kept K’Andre Miller. That is, if they wanted to match an offer sheet from the Carolina Hurricanes.

According to NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman, the Hurricanes were attempting to acquire Oilers defenseman Evan Bouchard via offer sheet. After Stan Bowman and the Oilers locker him down to a new deal at a new AAV of $10.5 million.

Tulsky isn’t afraid to play it risky, and with all his cards on the table:

That would cause alarm for the Hurricanes as they’d have to pivot to the next best RFA available on the market, K’Andre Miller, who was still a Ranger at that point.

The Rangers were willing to keep Miller is the most damning evidence of all. Elliotte Friedman’s morsels of truth reveal a mound of trouble, which could be the reason why Miller wanted a fresh start elsewhere.

As the Hurricanes would trade for Miller, and give him a $60 million deal over the next 8 years in the NHL.

A deal when they had the cap space still could’ve taken place, instead Chris Drury opted to trade him, and in return received future assets.

So it goes, another piece of the Rangers’ future off the chessboard and to a divisional rival.

Did GM Chris Drury break the locker room?
