Anthony Stolarz was eligible to sign an extension with the Maple Leafs as of July 1st and one Leafs reporter has revealed where the two sides currently stand. After suffering a concussion in Game 1 of their Round 2 series against the Florida Panthers, Stolarz was forced to watch from the sidelines as the Leafs fell in seven games to the eventual Stanley Cup Champions.
Fully recovered, Stolarz was seen back on the ice on Saturday with his trainer as he prepares for his second season with the Maple Leafs.
Stolarz would return in February picking up where he left off, resuming his starting role to kick off the playoffs. The former second-round pick ended the regular season with a 21-8-3 record, a solid 2.14 GAA, .914 SV% and 4 shutouts.
While the Leafs have taken care of business in signing John Tavares, Matthew Knies and Steven Lorentz to extensions, according to Nick Alberga of ‘Leafs Morning Take’, the Leafs have yet to engage in extension talks with the 31-year-old netminder on an extension.
On TSN 1050’s ‘OverDrive’ on Friday, Leafs reporter Mark Masters confirmed Alberga’s report and noted that the Leafs are being cautious with an extension for Stolarz and could very well take a ‘wait-and-see’ approach due to only having one season as a starter.
Masters also noted that the Leafs may want to see if Stolarz can continue his excellent play from last season into the upcoming season before making a decision on his future.
