Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin opened up recently about the possibility that the team could trade goaltender Arturs Silovs before the 2025-26 season begins.
The Vancouver Canucks are facing a bit of crowded crease heading into the 2025-26 season and while there’s no such thing as too much depth, in this case, Patrik Allvin may need to act on the trade market in order to clear the log jam.
With Kevin Lankinen and Thatcher Demko remaining with the Vancouver Canucks for the foreseeable future, it leaves Latvian netminder Arturs Silovs as the odd man out and with him now waiver eligible and more than likely to be claimed if he ended up on the wire, it looks like a trade could be possible this summer.
Patrik Allvin opens up on the possibility of trading Latvian netminder Arturs Silovs
During an appearance on 100% Canucks With Ferraro & Shannon, Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin shared that the organization is going to think about their goaltending situation in the weeks ahead.
Allvin added that the club is going to need to see if they’re comfortable bringing all three goaltenders to training camp in September or if they’ll need make a decision prior to that.
“Arty is a young and extremely good goalie. He was just the MVP in the American League playoffs, outstanding. He’s played at the highest stage for Latvia and will be on their Olympic roster. We’ll see over the next couple of weeks if we carry the goalies to camp or if a decision is made prior to it.” Allvin said.
While Allvin didn’t say it directly, that decision he’s referring to more than likely would have to do with a trade involving Arturs Silovs and with the market quite thin for free agent goaltenders, the Canucks could land a decent haul for the Riga native from teams looking for a backup netminder.
Jim Rutherford, the team’s President of Hockey Operations, also touched on the subject of trading Arturs Silovs while making an appearance on The Fan Hockey Show, saying that the club is very fortunate with where they are in terms of their goaltending situation, but they will need to make a decision at some point in the offseason.
Silovs, 24, was outstanding for the Abbotsford Canucks in the postseason, leading them to their first-ever Calder Cup and earned MVP honours after sporting a 16-7 record along with a 2.01 goals against average, a .931 save percentage and five shutouts.
If the Vancouver Canucks do end up trading Arturs Silovs this summer or before training camp begins, which is roughly ten weeks away, hopefully the Vancouver Canucks are able to bring back a player that can help them in the NHL right away, such as a middle-six centerman.
