A few hours into the NHL’s free agency period for 2025, the Vancouver Canucks announced that they’ve agreed to terms on contracts for three players, all of whom will more than likely start the year in Abbotsford but could help the big club if an injury arises.

The first player signed by the Vancouver Canucks was 2019 Stanley Cup champion Mackenzie MacEachern, who has inked a two-year, two-way contract with the club.

MacEachern, 31, was a third round pick of the St. Louis Blues back in 2012 and brings 123 games of NHL experience to the Vancouver Canucks organization.

This past season, the Bloomfield Hills, Michigan native was in the American Hockey League with the Springfield Thunderbirds where he tallied 32 points (12 goals, 20 assists) in 40 games.

As for the second player the team signed on Monday, it’s someone that Vancouver Canucks fans are familiar with – Joseph LaBate, the team’s fourth round pick in 2011, with Patrik Allvin giving him a one-year, two-way contract.

LaBate, 32, joined the Vancouver Canucks at the end of the 2014-15 season after four years in the NCAA with the University of Wisconsin.

The Burnsville, Minnesota native spent the majority of his time in the Vancouver Canucks organization in the American Hockey League with their affiliate at the time, the Utica Comets, but also appeared in 23 NHL games during the 2016-17 season.

In late November 2024, LaBate signed a one-year contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets and appeared in six games at the NHL level for them, while spending most of the year in the AHL with the Cleveland Monsters, registering 21 points (eight goals, 13 assists) in 51 games.

The final player signed by the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday was defenseman Jimmy Schuldt, who landed a two-year, two-way contract with the team.

Schuldt, 30, was the top NCAA free agent towards the end of the 2018-19 season after four years at St. Cloud State and had a ton of teams vying for his services but ultimately, he signed with the Vegas Golden Knights.

The Minnetonka, Minnesota native appeared in just one game for the Vegas Golden Knights and has bounced around the American Hockey League ever since.

During the 2024-25 season, Schuldt got another opportunity to play in the National Hockey League, skating in eight games for the rebuilding San Jose Sharks, along with 64 games for their AHL affiliate, the San Jose Barracuda.
