Devils Receive Encouraging News in Their Strong Pursuit to Acquire Quinn Hughes from Canucks

Quinn Hughes trade rumors have reignited this week after comments made by a former NHLer, now reporter at the NHL Network, during a segment talking about his younger brother, Luke.During the Canucks’ end-of-season media availability, President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford opened some eyes when he admitted that there’s a possibility the team could lose Quinn Hughes one day and that he has expressed a desire to play with his brothers Jack and Luke at some point in his NHL career.
“It may not boil down to money with [Quinn]. He said before he wants to play with his brothers. That would be partly out of our control. In our control if we brought his brothers here.” Rutherford said.

During a recent segment on the NHL Network, Ken Daneyko and Mike Johnson discussed the New Jersey Devils’ top priority, which is to lock up restricted free agent defenseman Luke Hughes, while the latter brought up the possibility of Quinn Hughes joining them as a free agent in the summer of 2027.
Johnson thinks that Luke Hughes could sign a deal with a shorter term, such as four years, as he waits for Quinn Hughes to possibly join the team and then when he’s due for a new contract, re-up for more money.
If you’re Luke, you say ‘I’ll take four (years) and I’ll take $28 (million),’ and then you’re back to it. Your brother (Jack) is going to be on the team, too Very likely, the other brother, Quinn, is two years away (from becoming a free agent)-he might be coming as well.” Johnson said.
Losing Quinn Hughes would be devastating for the Vancouver Canucks organization as he’s hands down the best defenseman the franchise has ever seen, at least from an offensive standpoint, which is quite impressive after just six full seasons in the NHL.
The Vancouver Canucks are going to do everything in their power to ensure that Quinn Hughes stays with the club long-term and if the team has a strong 2025-26 campaign, which includes a deep run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, then perhaps they could convince him to sign an extension when he becomes eligible on July 1st, 2026.
