It already feels like a while ago, but Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens probably pulled off the move of the summer in the NHL with the acquisition of Noah Dobson.
That said, it seemed like there was more to the story.. And that’s exactly what the new general manager of the New York Islanders has just confirmed!
Mathieu Darche confirms there were off-ice reasons behind the Noah Dobson trade to the Montreal Canadiens
From a hockey standpoint, especially for a team considered a playoff contender, it made absolutely no sense to trade an elite defenseman (like Dobson) for a young forward and two draft picks.
There clearly had to be off-ice reasons – and now we know that’s indeed the case.
In an interview on 98.5 Sports, Darche revealed exactly that.
“Dobson was traded because both sides couldn’t come to terms on a new contract for the defenseman.
The new GM of the Islanders was therefore forced to find a team to trade Dobson to.”

That explains a lot.. And on top of that, Darche mentioned that he learned (from Julien BriseBois) to never back down in contract negotiations, even if it means letting the player go. Wow.
It’s a truly fascinating interview!
It definitely gives us more clarity surrounding this major trade between the Montreal Canadiens and the New York Islanders involving Dobson.
