Elias Pettersson recently opened up on why the 2024-25 season was a difficult one for himself as he struggled offensively on the ice and dealt with drama off the ice.

The 2024-25 season was more than likely the toughest season of Elias Pettersson’s career in the National Hockey League for a number of reasons and the Swedish forward was making headlines throughout the year, but not in the way he would’ve liked to.

Early on in the season, reports circulated about a feud between himself and his now former teammate, J.T. Miller, which led to the latter being traded to the New York Rangers and in terms of his offensive production, it just wasn’t there and dropped off in a big way, as Pettersson finished the year with 45 points in 64 games.

Elias Pettersson opens up regarding difficult 2024-25 season

During an interview with the NHL’s Swedish website, Elias Pettersson opened up on his play during the 2024-25 season and the difficulties he faced throughout the year, which culminated in the Vancouver Canucks missing out on the Stanley Cup Playoffs, 12 months after being one win away from the Western Conference Final.

Pettersson said that he doesn’t think he had the right attitude heading into the season and because he wasn’t producing like he had been in years past, he began overthinking, which didn’t help him, he says.

He went on to share that a knee injury he dealt with during the summer of 2024 limited what he could do in terms of offseason training, which likely played a role in his slow start to the season.

“Maybe it was that early in the season I had the wrong attitude that yes, ‘now I’ve signed a big contract and now I have to do more, instead of just being myself’. And when the points didn’t come, I tended to start thinking and overthinking everything instead of just doing what I usually do.” Pettersson said.

He added, “My game (last season) was obviously not at the level it was in the two seasons before that… I had a knee injury last summer and that hindered a lot of my training then; it was hard to really train 100 percent. Now I’m just trying to look forward.”

After the season ended, reports suggested that the Vancouver Canucks were taking calls on Elias Pettersson ahead of his no-movement clause kicking in on July 1st and ultimately, Patrik Allvin held onto the Swedish forward, something that the team’s fans are happy about.

Now that he’s back at full health, hopefully Elias Pettersson’s offseason training program goes well and he returns to Vancouver in September hungry to get back to being a 90-100 point player, something the Canucks will need if they have any hopes of making the Stanley Cup Playoffs next April.
