In what is not the best news for the Vancouver Canucks, the reality is that captain Quinn Hughes may leave to join his brother Luke and Jack Hughes, and a trade framework is already in place that can see this become a reality.

With the Vancouver Canucks going through some serious troubles and disappointments during the 2024-25 NHL season, most notably missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the rumors about captain Quinn Hughes’ future with the team is already in full effect.

It may not boil down to money with [Quinn],» Rutherford said. «He said before he wants to play with his brothers. That would be partly out of our control. In our control if we brought his brothers here.» – Rutherford

Quinn Hughes’ Trade framework already in place previously set by Matthew Tkachuk‘s trade to the Florida Panthers

With hat in mind, he continued saying that if a deal is not done sooner rather than later for a contract extension, a trade might be the only outcome.

Obviously these comments starting a whirlwind of rumors and speculation about Hughes’ future in Vancouver, and looking at a similar situation that happened with Matthew Tkachuk and the Calgary Flames, the framework is already in place to see a superstar like Hughes depart.

When Matthew Tkachuk was traded to the Florida Panthers in 2022. According to a Sportsnet article, three years of thought backed Tkachuk’s decision to leave the Calgary Flames.

Tkachuk clarified his position in his first interview with Sportsnet.ca after the big trade. «when he put his signature on his three-year bridge deal in 2019, he always knew there was a chance at its conclusion it would be time to leave.»

Obviously this is the worst case scenario and the team does want him to stee him leave, but the reality is, Quinn Hughes does want to reunite with his brothers at some point during his career.
