After a year at Cushing Academy, Ryan Bourque is returning to the AHL.

Bourque, who’s the son of Boston Bruins legend Ray Bourque, was announced as the assistant coach of the Providence Bruins on Wednesday. He rounds out Ryan Mougenel’s staff with assistant coach Trent Whitfield and goaltending coach Mike Dunham.

Bourque played in 585 AHL games across nine seasons with stops in Connecticut/Hartford, Hershey, Bridgeport and Charlotte. He scored 85 goals and added 118 assists.

A 2009 third-round pick by the New York Rangers, he appeared in just one NHL game in 2014-15.

Bourque spent last season at Cushing Academy in Ashburnham — his alma mater — as the boys hockey team. He previously served as an assistant coach with the U.S. National Team Development Program in 2023-24 and was also an assistant with South Carolina in the ECHL.
