The Leafs are one of a handful of teams reportedly exploring the possibility of adding a former 40-goal scorer from the Seattle Kraken to strengthen their top-six.

Leafs GM Brad Treliving began replacing some of the lost production straight away, trading for 24-year-old Matias Maccelli, sending a conditional third-round pick to the Utah Mammoth in exchange. One of those options, according to The Fourth Period’s Dave Pagnotta, is Seattle Kraken forward Jared McCann.

The 29-year-old McCann has two years remaining on his contract with a 10-team no-trade list, but also carries a reasonable $5M cap hit.

McCann was very briefly a member of the Maple Leafs, being acquired by the club ahead of the Seattle Expansion Draft in and was used as a hail mary in order to protect Alex Kerfoot and Justin Holl. We know how that worked out.

Chris Johnston noted on his latest Chris Johnston Show that the Kraken are willing to move the one-time 40-goal scorer

After struggling in Pittsburgh, McCann found a home in Seattle cracking the 20-goal mark four consecutive seasons, including a career-high 40 goals in the 2022-23 season.

Leaving him unprotected during the expansion draft was largely viewed as a mistake by the Leafs, but with an opportunity to re-acquire the multi-use forward, the Leafs should do everything short of handing over Easton Cowan or Ben Danford.
