Vancouver Canucks forward Elias Pettersson details difficult 2024-25 season

When speaking to NHL.com reporter Janne Bengtsson recently, Elias Pettersson says he believes that going into the 2024-25 campaign and early on in the year, he wasn’t in the right mindset.

“Maybe early in the season I had the wrong mindset. I thought, ‘now I’ve signed a big contract so I have to do more’, instead of just being myself.” Pettersson said.

Ultimately, Pettersson says his knee injury, which hurt his ability to train at 100 percent last summer, played a role in those struggles offensively, but now his focus is on moving forward and getting ready for what he hopes is a big season for the Canucks.

“My game (last season) was obviously not at the level it was in the two seasons before that… I had a knee injury last summer and that hindered a lot of my training then; it was hard to really train 100 percent,” Pettersson said. “Now I’m just trying to look forward.

Vancouver Canucks Head Coach Adam Foote knows how competitive Elias Pettersson is and that he believes he’ll be committed to being a better player this season, which in turn could help elevate the team and push them towards a berth in the Stanley Cup Playoffs after missing out this year.

Petey and I had some pretty good discussions already this season and I really think he wants to, I really think he knows he needs to do and he’s going to be committed. He’s got a great group around him, that supports him and is a team around him. I’m going to make sure I have the talk with him and that we continue our relationship, I support him”

Pettersson, 26, is coming off the second-lowest single-season point total of his career in the NHL, registering just 45 (15 goals, 30 assists) in 64 games and hopefully, he’ll at least get back to being a point-per-game player during the 2025-26 season.

The Vancouver Canucks committed a lot of money to Elias Pettersson, hoping that he would deliver and, along with captain Quinn Hughes, lead them to a Stanley Cup during his tenure with the club, but the team has a lot of work to do if they want to be considered true contenders.
