Mets first baseman Pete Alonso is taking some inspiration from the NHL in a new suggestion he has for Major League Baseball.

He thinks the sport should let players fight.

While speaking at the All-Star Game events this week, Alonso was asked what MLB rule he would change if he were given the chance.

Alonso’s answer came quick: let pitchers and hitters fight like hockey players. Hitters shouldn’t be ejected from a game for charging the pitcher’s mound.

“So I think it should be hockey style,” he said. “No teams, no nothing, because that’s when people can, like, seriously get hurt. So, I think if you want to go out and charged the mound, then you should be able to.”

Alonso’s idea is actually really well-thought-out.

“But if the pitcher or hitter charges, and they don’t want to fight, and they take a knee, then they don’t have to fight,” he said. “But if someone charges the mound, it’s 1 v. 1 hockey style. And then that’s it.”

Alonso, 30, is playing in his fifth All-Star Game this year after hitting .280 with a .908 OPS and 21 home runs through the first half of the 2025 season.
