Michigan State hockey’s national title chances took a hit last week, with a pair of notable moves dropping the Spartans down the oddsmakers board.

Once considered the clear cut favorite to win the national championship next season, Michigan State now holds the third best odds to end the season on top, according to Draft Kings. The Spartans are listed at +900 to win the national championship, tied with rival Michigan with the third-best odds. The Spartans are only behind Penn State (+400) and Boston University (+800).

Michigan State hockey had a rough couple of days last week, with superstar prospect Gavin McKenna electing to play for Penn State over the Spartans. One day later, Spartans star returning forward Isaac Howard was traded to the Edmonton Oilers and confirmed he would turn pro. Those two negative moves for the Spartans certainly lowered their odds at winning the national championship.

Despite some bad breaks last week, Michigan State still is a clear title contender next season. They probably won’t enter the year as the preseason No. 1 team in the country, but they will be top five and once again in the mix for a national championship this year.
