Utah Mammoth forward Michael Carcone reportedly signed back with the team on Tuesday, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. The dollar amount is unknown as of publication but it is confirmed to be a one-year contract. Free agency opened two weeks ago and it seemed Carcone’s time with the Mammoth was up, but it sounds like that situation has changed.

Utah Mammoth Brings Carcone Back on One-Year Deal

After being vocal about the lack of playing time he was given, Carcone is back in Utah anyway. It was all but confirmed that the 29-year-old winger would test the open market and end up elsewhere. This will add more competition in the Mammoth bottom-six. Right now, that would likely consist of Lawson Crouse, Brandon Tanev, Jack McBain, Alexander Kerfoot, and Kevin Stenlund. So, Carcone may have to fight for a spot, particularly with Liam O’Brien.

Perhaps Carcone did not like the offers he was receiving from other teams, or he had a change of heart. Carcone had said himself that he felt his time in Utah was over and was ready to move on. With Matias Maccelli now a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs, that is less competition for Carcone at left wing.

After scoring 21 goals in 74 games during the 2023-2024 season, Carcone had just seven in 53 games this past year. He is coming off a two-year, $775,000 deal. More known for his forechecking rather than point scoring, Carcone will be a good option in a checking role in 2025-2026.

Carcone will not receive the playing time he hopes for in Utah. Despite this, he still chose to return after averaging just 11 minutes last season. Expect him to remain in a fourth-line role, especially with Tanev signing and probably locking down a position on the third-line. Utah’s opening night roster will determine Carcone’s place in the team.
