The Dakota Joshua trade on Thursday afternoon opened up the possibility for Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin to make an addition to the team’s roster.Patrik Allvin was able to move out some salary on Thursday as he traded forward Dakota Joshua to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a fourth round pick in the 2028 National Hockey League Entry Draft.

Now that the Vancouver Canucks have some additional cap space to work with, all eyes are on Patrik Allvin and the team’s management group to make an addition to their NHL roster, perhaps even a top-six forward, if possible.

Vancouver Canucks open up possibility for future addition by trading Dakota Joshua

Trading Dakota Joshua certainly wasn’t an easy decision for Patrik Allvin to do, especially after signing him to a multi-year contract just a little over 12 months ago, but with the team tight to the cap, it was a necessary move if they wanted to bring in another impact forward this summer.

According to Canucks News Summaries on X, the Vancouver Canucks now have around $3.2 million available in cap space to work with this summer.

“Canucks now have around $3.2m in cap space. Give or take depending on how you construct the bottom of the roster.” Canucks News Summaries said.

When speaking with reporters heading into free agency about potentially clearing cap space this summer, Patrik Allvin told David Quadrelli of Canucks Army that he doesn’t look at it like he’s moving money, but more so about creating options to make the team competitive for the 2025-26 season.

“We’ll see. For me, it’s not just about creating cap space. It’s about seeing what options we have to make our team competitive.” Allvin said.
