DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) – For the 20th anniversary of Hockey Day Minnesota, the Rock Ridge Wolverines boys varsity hockey team will travel to Hastings, Minn., to play on the outdoor sheet of ice.
Rock Ridge will face off against St. Thomas Academy on Saturday, July 24.
The Wolverines were selected along with Park Cottage Grove, Eastridge, St. Thomas Academy, and the host team, Hastings.
It’s the second straight year that a hockey team from Northeastern Minnesota was selected to participate, as the Hibbing/Chisholm Bluejackets played in the event last season.
Rock Ridge went 22-4-2 in head coach Matt Niskanen’s first season as bench boss, and the former University of Minnesota Bulldog and NHL star helped lead the Wolverines to their first-ever Section 7AA title game.
The nightcap game features the Minnesota Wild hosting the defending two-time Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers at Grand Casino Arena.
