BOSTON — A day after Team USA coach Mike Sullivan said that Quinn Hughes was headed to Boston to replace injured Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy at the NHL 4 Nations Face-Off, the Canucks superstar defenseman remains in Western Canada.
He was scheduled to practice again in Vancouver on Wednesday.
Team USA general manager Bill Guerin told The Athletic’s Michael Russo that they were still working to bring Hughes east. Russo tweeted:
“Team USA GM Bill Guerin tells me they’re still working through the Quinn Hughes situation and are still trying to bring him to Boston. He’ll skate again with the Canucks today”

ESPN’s Emily Kaplan reported that Hughes is unlikely to travel unless he’s certain to play. She tweeted:
“Latest on Quinn Hughes: He had just traveled to Vancouver & won’t make another cross-continent trip to Boston unless he’s going to play. He plans on skating in Van again today. Believe all USA players (outside McAvoy) good to go but things change fast in this tournament.”
Hughes can’t be added unless another defenseman is sidelined.
Auston Matthews and Matthew Tkachuk were at practice on Wednesday for Team USA. Brady Tkachuk was not.
