This isn’t your weekly Powerball drawing; this is the NHL Draft Lottery, which is held to determine the top 16 picks in the 2025 NHL Draft at the end of June. The NHL has invited fans into the process of how they pick the top 16 NHL teams, just so there’s no funny business behind the scenes.
For decades, the lottery took place off-camera in a side room with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, accountants from Ernst & Young, and a small pool of journalists. Then, NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly would take the stage and dramatically flip logo cards one by one, counting down from 16 to 1. They will ditch the cards and take you right into the room.
The NHL Draft Lottery has always been about keeping things fair, discouraging tanking, and ensuring that no team can coast into Connor Bedard-level greatness without earning it fair and square.
