Welcome to the 2025 NHL Draft results and picks for the first round Friday night, where the draft is being held at L.A. Live’s Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

The Detroit Red Wings selected left wing Carter Bear with the No. 13 overall selection of the draft. The 18-year-old from Winnipeg played for the Everett Silvertips of the WHL last year.

This year, things will be a little different at the draft, as teams have been given permission to stay home and conduct their drafts from their facilities, so you won’t see general managers like Steve Yzerman and Mathieu Darche, who will make the first pick, on the stage.

There was 32 picks in Round 1, with each team having three minutes to make a selection or trade. The New York Islanders started the night off by selecting defenseman Matthew Schaefer first overall, and the Calgary Flames ended the night by picking center Cullen Potter with the 32nd pick.

Day 2 of the draft with Rounds 2-7 begins at noon on Saturday, with the draft televised on NHL Network and available to stream on ESPN+. NHL free agency begins Tuesday.
