The Washington Capitals and Baltimore City Recreation and Parks (BCRP) are teaming up once again to host the 13th Baltimore Street Hockey Tournament at Madison Square Recreation Center on Friday, July 25, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The street hockey tournament includes children from 16 community centers across the city of Baltimore. Approximately 160 children will participate, including the defending champions from Madison Square Recreation Center.

In 2009, the Capitals began working with community centers in Baltimore to provide street hockey over the summer, and the annual tournament first launched in 2010.

The Capitals have donated street hockey equipment to 40 community centers in Baltimore City and partnered with Rec and Parks to encourage children to be involved in sports and other physical activity. The Baltimore Street Hockey Tournament is one of several youth hockey programs the Washington Capitals support across the Washington, D.C. region.

They also support a Hockey School program that launched in Baltimore City in 2018. The Capitals have donated a set of floor hockey equipment to public schools in the city reaching close to 78,000 students as another way for children in Baltimore to be introduced to the sport.

Support from two organizations — the Washington Capitals’ Capital Impact Fund and Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation — have boosted the tournament experience for the children. The event now includes transportation, catered lunch, customized team shirts for each community center, a branded water bottle for each player, championship medals and a DJ to announce and provide music.

In addition to increasing access to the game across the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia region, the Capitals’ Youth Hockey program’s goal is to “facilitate an inclusive environment” with a variety of programs for all levels, on and off the ice.

The tournament begins at 10 a.m., with playoffs slated to start at 2 p.m. The championship game is scheduled for approximately 3:50 p.m.

The Baltimore Street Hockey Tournament will take place at The Dome of the Madison Square Recreation Center, located at 1401 E. Biddle Street, Baltimore, MD.
