An NHL insider has recently confirmed the Vancouver Canucks’ interest in a former third overall pick, who remains a restricted free agent as of Thursday morning.

With August quickly approaching, it feels like there is at least a dozen teams around the National Hockey League that are looking to make an addition to their roster and the Vancouver Canucks are one of them with Thomas Drance of The Athletic reporting recently that Patrik Allvin is not done adding to the club.”It may be mid-summer, but #Canucks management isn’t “off to the cottage” just yet.

Hear the club is monitoring a couple of the UFA options still on the market. No surprise given their recent history.

VAN needs to move out cap dollars first, + they’re actively working to do so.” Drance said.

Now that the Vancouver Canucks have an additional $3.25 million in cap space to work with following the trade of Dakota Joshua to the Toronto Maple Leafs, Patrik Allvin has an opportunity to make a big addition to the team’s roster, if he wishes, and it looks like they may have their sights set on a former third overall pick.

As Patrik Allvin and the Vancouver Canucks continue to evaluate their options on the free agent and trade markets heading into the second half of the offseason, there aren’t many big names available per se, however due to a disagreement in the AAV of his next deal a former top-three pick could be up for grabs.

According to Patrick Johnston of The Province, the Vancouver Canucks do have interest in restricted free agent forward Mason McTavish of the Anaheim Ducks, but cautioned that the team might not have the necessary assets to get a deal done.

“Hence their continued interest in Roslovic, as well as their interest in Mason McTavish, the Anaheim Ducks’ restricted free agent. Of course adding McTavish, the third-overall pick in the 2021 draft, will be very hard: he’s a highly-regarded player with huge upside and will cost a big price in trade, perhaps more than the Canucks can afford.” Johnston said.

McTavish, 22, would be the perfect fit for the Vancouver Canucks’ second line center role as not only would he bring some offense, coming off his first 20+ goal season in the NHL, he also has a bit of bite to his game, something the team will need if they get into the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

As mentioned by Johnston, the cost would be very high and honestly, it’s hard to envision a deal getting done between the Anaheim and Vancouver without the Ducks acquiring one of Jonathan Lekkerimaki or Tom Willander, along with a first round pick in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft, potentially another asset too.

Given Vancouver’s need for a second line center and someone who plays the way Mason McTavish does, it wouldn’t be a shock to anyone if they are very aggressive in their pursuit of the former Olympian.
