Whoops.

Game 6 between the Stars and the Avalanche ended in demoralizing fashion for Dallas, turning what looked like an instant classic into one Stars fans might already be trying to forget.

While the box score reads that the game’s deciding goal was scored by Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon, it actually pinballed off a few members of the Stars before finding its way past Jake Oettinger and into the Dallas net. The own-goal gave the Avalanche a 5-4 lead in a game they’d win 7-4 to force a winner-take-all Game 7 in Dallas on Saturday.

The last time MacKinnon touched the puck was when he threw it in front of the net in an attempt at a centering pass.

Instead it ricocheted off the skate of Thomas Harley and landed at the stick of Sam Steel. Steel tried to clear the puck out of the zone, but instead banked it right off of teammate Colin Blackwell. It bounced off Blackwell’s chest, over the outreached glove of Oettinger and into the net for a devastating go-ahead goal. It’s credited as an unassisted score for MacKinnon.

Dallas wasn’t able to find the equalizer afterward, and conceded two empty-net goals to seal Game 6 and force a seventh.

The series now heads back to Dallas where the Stars, as they’ve already done twice in this series, will look to bounce back from a loss.
