The Washington Capitals saw another prospect part ways with the organization, as Riley Sutter is headed for the KHL, according to reports.
Per Inside AHL Hockey’s Tony Androckitis, Sutter, who was a Group 6 unrestricted free agent, has signed with the KHL’s Kunlun Red Star for the 2025-26 season.

Sutter was originally drafted by Washington in the third round of the 2018 NHL Draft. A reliable, two-way checking forward, Sutter thrived at the center position in Hershey and took on a role as a penalty killer and utility player, while proving vital in the team’s pursuit of back-to-back Calder Cups.
The 25-year-old, known for his 6-foot-4 frame and hockey IQ, had nine points in 55 games with the Bears this past season. Though there was hope that he could eventually make the jump to the NHL as a role player, there was never a spot that opened up for Sutter, with Nic Dowd becoming a mainstay on Washington’s powerhouse fourth line and limited vacancies up front.
Sutter is one of several Bears to sign overseas, including Mike Vecchione, Pierrick Dubé and Mike Sgarbossa. Chase Priskie, who was traded at the draft for Declan Chisholm, also inked a deal in the KHL after hitting the market.
