Arvid Soderblom and the Chicago Blackhawks avoided arbitration on Saturday morning. The Blackhawks signed the Swedish goaltender to a two-year deal with a $2.75 million cap hit. Evolving Hockey projected Soderblom signing a two-year deal worth around $1.5 million. Soderblom turns 26 next month and now has until he’s 28 to prove that last season was a sign of better things to come.

Soderblom’s arbitration hearing was scheduled to take place in two days. Considering that Soderblom ended up getting more than what was projected and that the Blackhawks have a massive amount of cap space, this is a win for both sides. Arvid Soderblom will most likely be the backup to Spencer Knight in the upcoming season, according to Ben Pope of the Chicago Sun-Times.
Last season was big for Soderblom. After a horrendous first year at the NHL level in 2023-24, Arvid Soderblom bounced back with an excellent stretch of goaltending before a rocky finish to the 2024-25 season. Soderblom posted a .898 SV% in 36 games played, slightly lower than the league average of .900. Through the first 16 games of the season, Soderblom had a .909 SV%.

Spencer Knight will be entering his last year in his current contract, which carries a $4.5 million cap hit. Knight will be a restricted free agent next summer. There’s also Laurent Broissoit, who has one year left in his deal. For Broissoit, the question surrounding him is, if he becomes healthy, what do the Blackhawks do with him?
With Soderblom’s contract secured, there’s only one player left: Wyatt Kaiser. The 22-year-old left-handed defenseman wasn’t eligible for arbitration, but his contract projection via Evolving Hockey is somewhere around $1.5 million for two years.
