This tournament is largely seen as the first step towards World Junior Championship roster selection. It’s also a key showcase for Team Canada brass to start making some early decisions.
Hockey Canada announced their official roster for the National Junior Team Summer Showcase today. Among the players selected are three Calgary Flames draftees in the form of Henry Mews, Zayne Parekh, and Cole Reschny.
Tournaments like the National Junior Team Summer Showcase are good stages to further develop prospects and get them attention from Hockey Canada.
These selections are a testament to the Flames’ scouting department. Both Parekh and Reschny are Calgary Flames first-rounders in the 2024 and 2025 drafts, respectively. Henry Mews, a third-rounder in 2024, has been a standout offensive-minded defender in the OHL with both Ottawa and Sudbury.
Team Canada is coached by London Knights bench boss Dale Hunter, with assistants Brad Lauer (Spokane) and Gardiner MacDougall (Moncton).
Canada’s first action takes place in Minneapolis on July 29 at 4:30 CDT, where Team Canada White plays Team Canada Red.
Team Canada will take on Finland on July 30, Sweden on August 1, and Team USA on August 2. This will be a good chance to preview possible World Junior Championship matchups.
