Blackhawks Chirps
The World Junior Summer Showcase continued on Monday. A.J. Spellacy and USA Blue lost 3-2 in the early game. Spellacy has yet to find the scoresheet in two games. The late games saw USA White beat Sweden 4-2. Boston Bruins first-round draft pick James Hagens had a pair of assists for the second straight game. Today’s lone game will see Canada Red versus Canada White at 4:30 pm. Sacha Boisvert and Marek Vanacker have been skating on Canada Red.
After the game, Spellacy was asked if the Blackhawks have the best football team in the NHL.
Been enjoying my time with my pals over at CHGO Blackhawks. Mario Tirabassi and I did a quick mini-podcast where we talked about the Rockford IceHogs we are most excited to see this season.
Then I did a Mailbag Monday show with Jay Zawaski, and we discussed the Blackhawks’ offseason, Nick Lardis, and how little we know about this year’s Lollapalooza lineup.
Last night, we got the unfortunate news that the Chicago Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg passed away. Sandberg was Chicago sports royalty in the 1980s, alongside Walter Payton and Michael Jordan. He was one of the biggest reasons I fell in love with baseball and the Cubs. Sandberg was at the first Winter Classic at Wrigley Field in 2009, participating in a hockey version of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” alongside Blackhawks legends Bobby Hull, Denis Savard, Tony Esposito, and Stan Mikita.

NHL Chirps
According to Joe Smith and Michael Russo of The Athletic, the Minnesota Wild and Marco Rossi have not spoken since June. He’s looking for a long-term deal like teammate Matt Boldy, while the Wild wants to sign him to a bridge deal.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman shared the details of Dylan Samberg’s arbitration case with the Winnipeg Jets. He’s asking for $6 million while the Jets filed for $2.5 million. Because he will qualify for unrestricted free agency, he can only be given a one-year deal by the arbitrator. The 26-year-old defenseman had six goals and 20 points in 60 games last season.
Edmonton Oilers general manager Stan Bowman took some heat for signing forward Trent Ferderic to an eight-year, $30.8 million deal this summer. However, he defended the move to David Staples of The Edmonton Journal.
NHL Birthday Roll Call, July 29: Billy Harris, Dave Cameron, Liam O’Brien, Neal Pionk, Clayton Keller, and Oliver Kapanen.
