Blackhawks sign emerging goaltender, leaving one goalie likely available for trade

With the Blackhawks now having Spencer Knight and Arvid Soderblom under contract, 32 year old veteran and former Oiler Laurent Brossoit is rendered expendable – and could very well be placed on waivers.

Brossoit is in the final year of his contract with the Blackhawks paying him $3.3M, but he’s yet to play a game with the team after suffering a severe injury. He’s now healthy and ready to go, but the Blackhawks have replaced him.

Though he’s coming off some serious injury problems, Brossoit has posted incredible results in his last two seasons with a .927 save percentage. He even has 10 games of playoff experience, including one in Edmonton.

Proposed Trade:
Oilers receive: Laurent Brossoit ($1.65M retained), 2026 seventh-round pick
Blackhawks receive: Connor Ungar, 2028 third-round pick
The Oilers may not have to pay that much if Brossoit will be exposed to waivers, and could land a very successful veteran goalie for cheap in trade. However, adding the assets may be necessary for salary retention – and the Oilers would have to move out Calvin Pickard.

Edmonton will surely find a way to improve their goaltending sometime during the next season, and Chicago looks to be a likely trade partner.
