The Edmonton Oilers have been weak at the goaltending position for the entire McDavid era, but there’s new hope on the way in 2 promising goalie prospects.

The Oilers have yet to address their goaltending this offseason as well, but insiders are still hinting that a move is under consideration. For now though at least, the team insists they’re comfortable with the tandem of Skinner and Pickard.

Two Oilers goalies reach into top 10 team prospect rankings

With their weakness in the crease and no help seemingly on the way, Oilers fans and even the organization will be closely watching the development of two emerging talents in Emil Vinni and Samuel Jonsson.

Analysts at OilersNation are currently counting down the team’s top 10 prospects, and the 19 year old Finnish goalie Vinni has earned the 10th spot. The scouting report is that he’s an aggressive, athletic goaltender.

Eemil Vinni is a well-rounded goaltender who has an exciting approach to the game which plays into his strengths. The 6-foot-2 netminder is not afraid to attack shooters and force their hand – leading to a lot of mistakes by opponents. Very active and assertive in the crease, but not overly aggressive. He controls pucks with his hands extremely well, and his elite edgework completes the package.

Vinni’s raw stats aren’t too impressive with three seasons under a .900 save percentage, but there’s still belief he’ll adjust well to North America when he does make the flip.

Aside from Vinni, the Oilers have an even better goalie prospects higher in the rankings with Samuel Jonsson. According to most recent rankings from Scott Wheeler, Jonsson is one of the top 3 Oilers prospects along with Savoie and Howard. Jonsson will surely rank higher than Vinni.

The Oilers may be weak in the crease right now, but it’s at least encouraging to see two young talents in the pipeline to the NHL.
