Sometimes, it’s what you don’t say, or do, that speaks loudest. This was certainly the case with former NHL goalie Marc-Andre’ Fleury who took a shot at his former team, the Chicago Blackhawks.
According to various social media posts, the 3-time Stanley Cup champion has released a limited edition vodka in his hometown province of Quebec, Vodka Fleury No 29, the proceeds of which will be donated to theCentre D’Action Benevole’ du Bas-Richelieu.
The vodka bottle’s label features an image of Fleury’s mask in the colors of his previous teams: Pittsburgh Penguins, Vegas Golden Knights, and Minnesota Wild. Visibly absent from Marc-Andre’s list of former teams, however, is the Chicago Blackhawks.
No indication is available that speaks to why Chicago was not included in his charity brand of Vodka. It may have to do with Fleury’s one-time request when he played with Chicago, to not be traded, and was then traded to the Wild. Hard to say, really.
Also, Fleury was moved from Chicago in the summer of 2021, after winning the Vezina Trophy with Vegas Golden Knights, but allegedly learned about the trade on Twitter. Perhaps that was the reason; we can only speculate. Yet, Chicago’s exclusion is suspicious.
In 1051 career games, Marc-Andre’ Fleury has 575 wins, 339 losses, and 95 overtime losses. He’s won 3 Stanley Cups and a Vezina Trophy. There is no doubt his decorated career will see him in the Hockey Hall of Fame just as soon as he is eligible to receive that honor.
No matter what, Fleury will go down as one of the most popular goalies of this era of the NHL – and one of the very last to play 1000+ games.
