Florida Panthers forward Sam Bennett has broken his silence following the hit to the head that injured Leafs goalie, friend and former teammate Anthony Stolarz.

While the Toronto Maple Leafs were able to beat the Florida Panthers in Game 1 of their second round series, jumping out to a 1-0 lead, that’s not what stood out as the story from last night’s game.

The story that everyone is now focused on in Toronto is the shot heard around the hockey world, after Sam Bennett drove hard to the net during the second period, clipping friend and former Panthers teammate Anthony Stolarz with an elbow/forearm to the head. The result of the impact left Stolarz shaken up, and ultimately landed him in the hospital.

Bennett was not made available to the media after the game on Monday, but did speak publicly on Tuesday, stating that, more than anything else, he was concerned for his friend.

“I heard that he went to the hospital last night, and he’s a good friend of mine. I reached out to him. He responded. Never want to see an injury like that. From my point of view, I’m just taking the puck the net. I didn’t even know that we made contact until after.”

Bennett also attempted to establish that he didn’t believe the hit was delivered with any force and that there was absolutely no intent to injure on the play.

It’s anyone’s guess how the Leafs will respond and whether or not there is now a target on Bennett’s back after having taken out the Leafs’ starting goalie.
