The 2025 Calgary Flames Prospect Rankings are now complete, and all of our profiles are out in the world. Now, here’s the opportunity to peek behind the curtain at how our writers voted and how the results were tabulated.
How the Calgary Flames’ 2025 Prospect Rankings shook out
A whopping 14 of our writers voted on who they thought the Flames’ top prospects were. Each writer voted for their top 10 prospects and gave out two honourable mentions. The totals were compiled, with ties being decided by the prospect with the higher total rank, then by the player with the most top-10 votes, and finally, if a tie still existed, by the player who appeared on the most total boards. Here’s how the top 10 looked this season:
In what should surprise nobody, Zayne Parekh was the consensus top prospect. The defenceman featured first on every single ballot. From there, the rest of the top five was mostly a consensus, with most writers giving votes to some combination of Cole Reschny, Hunter Brzustewicz, Cullen Potter, and Matvei Gridin. Except for Reschny, each of the other three players got at least one vote outside of the top five. Brzusteicz and Potter each received a seventh-place vote, while Gridin got a 7th, two 8ths, a 9th, and a 10th-place vote.
Sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth were all pretty close, with the latter three separated by a matter of decimal points. Basha was a touch ahead, receiving several fifth-place votes and no votes under eighth. Suniev and Morin were neck-and-neck for seventh and eighth, with the latter coming out just ahead, and Battaglia just behind the two of them.
Tenth place went to Henry Mews, who was the only player to not appear in all rankings, being left out by one writer. While many admire Mews’s play offensively, his defensive play certainly makes him a risky prospect to bet on. Flames fans who have followed the team’s prospects for some time now can remember many exciting offensive defencemen who just couldn’t make it. While he received two sixth-place votes, most writers had him ninth or tenth.
The honourable mentions were all over the place, but with four top-10 votes, Samuel Honzek took the first spot. He finished with one eighth-place vote as his highest ranking, and given his pedigree, he merits inclusion in this list.
The other honourable mention went to Luke Misa, who had three top-10 votes and one seventh-place vote. While questions remain around what the Flames have in him, finishing top-20 in OHL scoring is certainly impressive in his D+1 season. Because of the number of top-10 votes he received as well as his overall ranking, Misa took the other spot.
While very close, Misa beat out Arseni Sergeev and Theo Stockselius for the final honourable mention stop. Both Sergeev and Stockselius received many honourable mention nods, but only Sergeev received a single top-10 vote.
Other players who received votes were Kiril Zarubin, who earned a ninth-place vote, Rory Kerins with two honourable mentions, and Jeremie Poirier and William Stromgren with one honourable mention each.
Taken together, the 12 players honoured this year comprised four defencemen and eight forwards. Interestingly, no goalies feature in the rankings this year, but Sergeev was just outside looking in. With Dustin Wolf’s play, goaltending is not a major need in the organization right now.
