The Vancouver Canucks just received some pretty insightful inside information that could change everything for their recently re-signed All-Star netminder Thatcher Demko.
Kevin Woodley on why Demko could have a big year, camp battles, and more: Canucks Conversation
After a disappointing 2024-25 season, Vancouver Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin had a lot of cleaning up to do when it comes to upgrading their roster, but even more so re-signing the players that make up their core.
“General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that the #Canucks have agreed to terms with goaltender Thatcher Demko on a three-year contract with a $8.5 million AAV.”
New Information comes to light about Thatcher Demko’s come back season
With an abysmal season for Demko coming off a near career ending knee injury, this exact factor could be the reason why he could have his best season of his career, according to Kevin Woodley of InGoal Magazine.
«If you look at his history, this sets up to be a really good year for him in terms of staying healthy or playing a larger number of games; getting through more of the season,» Woodley said. «You look at his first year as a starter – 64 games. Gets injured late in the season, plays through it for a while until they’re clearly no longer in the playoffs, then they shut him down. 64 games is his career high. He needed surgery that offseason.»
Because this is not the first time Demko has gone through some serious injury issues, the history suggests that he will have a huge season.
«So if you step back and look at it,» Woodley continued, «when he has a healthy summer, he has a good season where he plays a lot of games. When he finishes the year not healthy and has to rehab in the summer not doing his regular work, that’s where he runs into trouble during the season. So in terms of that pattern, it all sets up to be a good season this year.»
Although history can not be relied on to determine what will happen, the evidence does indicate that fans should be excited about what is to come for their goalie situation in 2025-26.
