SUNRISE, Fla. (CBS12 News) — As if it’s not exciting enough for Florida Panthers Captain Aleksander Barkov to be preparing to win back-to-back Stanley Cups, but he got a huge surprise at practice.

Barkov was presented the King Clancy Trophy for his leadership and contribution in the community by children from Joe DiMaggio’s Children’s Hospital. That touching moment was then followed by the group also surprising Barkov with the Selke Trophy and the King Clancy Memorial Trophy. It’s the second straight year Barkov was won the award for best defensive forward in the NHL, and the third time in five years.

“I was not expecting it at all,” said Barkov about the amazing honors. “When they brought in another trophy, it was pretty overwhelming for me. I am truly honored by that award.”

Barkov has donated $1,600 for every goal and $800 for every assist he has scored to the children’s hospital. He will also get a $25,000 donation from the NHL to give to charities of his choice.
